The kitchen in Oren & Shawna’s century home was in desperate need of a renovation.

The footprint of the space had to remain the same as did the doors at both ends of the long and narrow space. The high ceilings allowed us to play up the verticality of the space, adding high cabinets for extra storage and subway tile right to the ceiling. Faux beams were added to the ceiling for visual interest and a great ceramic tile in the encaustic cement tile look adds some whimsy. The cabinets were kept fresh and modern, using high gloss white stock cabinetry combined with custom Baltic birch plywood casing. The L-shaped counter with peninsula added 2 person seating in a space that was too small to accommodate a table – great for breakfast or a chat over coffee. There is also an additional cabinet tucked underneath providing even more storage. The microwave was built-in under the counter to free up top surface space and a awkward gap was filled in with a custom wine rack and extra power outlet. Project by Grassroots Design Ottawa.
